six months ago, on a bitter and harshly cold afternoon, amy and i needed something to look forward to. something that reminded us that winter would not indeed last forever, though it truly felt that way. so we booked a little getaway to rome. i had no idea the crazy direction and life changing events that would take place between that afternoon and today - but here we are - and regardless of how insane my life is right now, i can not tell you what nine days with my best friend in italy will do for my soul. a world of good, i assure you. we leave this afternoon and will spend the first couple of nights just outside of florence with amy's brother kevin and his girlfriend amber who have had the most amazing adventure themselves over this last year {please go lose yourself on their site - they are such an inspiration and their writing and research on sustainable food practices around the world is amazing}. then on to a quiet apartment in rome where we plan to do a little site seeing, a lot of drinking, more eating and tons of wandering aimlessly through the glorious streets.
see you soon friends...

p.s. and on 19 july... martha and i have another little jewel for you.

I spent the summer in Italy about 8 years ago; this is a reminder that I need to go back!

This has really inspired me to go out and clean my balcony so I can eat breakfast at the table out there tomorrow!

Sounds amazing. A trip to Italy is on my bucket list...to see the sights, to lounge on the beach, to hide away in the countryside, to eat, and take a cooking class, and experience the whole thing.
And best of luck with your move to Brooklyn. My husband and I just spent a month there for work. A fun place!

Ride the Eurostar from Rome to Florence as the sun is setting one clear evening. Bring your iPod. Listen to your favorite Italian songs. Take in the views. Study the shadows the sun casks against the Tuscan hills. I remember it all so vividly. It's intoxicating.
I lived and studied in Florence for nearly half a year; four years ago. Though I'm well traveled, like so many, I found a special connection with Italy.
I would do anything to live in Florence again. Enjoy your trip -- and post photos so we can all live vicariously through you!
